Irmelin goes Finland

Irmelin loves Finland!
We are in Vaasa right now together with hundreds and hundreds of other singers. It's the Vaasa choir Festival. Super nicely organized by the festival crew, many thanks, kiitos kiitos! Your dedication for the vocal music is so uplifting and empowering. Lovely to walk in the center of town and hear choir music in every corner.

Yesterday evening we made a concert at Ritz, a theater-like hall, it's a cinema with totally beautiful original atmospher. Interiors from the time it was built. A special thank you to all who came to listen with so big ears and big hearts. Kiitos to all of you. We allways love to share the stories from the sea, from the travellers, of love, of death, of joy again after the sorrow.

It's always a great pleasure to sing in a hall like this, with good light and sound and a setting that enhance focus and energy for the details in our voices and music.

I wonder if they sometimes dance lindy hop, balboa or boogie woogie here? This is just outside the big cinema hall.

We had a lovely dinner at il Banco, a house built on 1860 for a bank in those days. Today a culinary rich place to go, my dinner was ecellent.

Today we perform again at Ritz and this time it's a shared concert with the choir Philomela. I'm very much looking forward to sing there. We had super nice sound!

Reflections of light and water

A sunny afternoon near the beach on a winter day.

Walk by the sea.

Blue sky after days of rain.

I've spend time with a group of youngster & three other youth leaders, totally marvellous group! Confirmand group.

Four days we shared talk, songs, playfulness, deep talk, games, movie (Matrix I) creativity, candy-eating, prayers, friendship at the youth camp.
Us grown ups enjoyed the beach walk most, perhaps.
Pilgrim walk.
To me it was one of the great parts, as I always like to be outside
with the sky as my ceiling.

The power of play is my greatest memory of this camp.
Thank you for the play!

Involving every guest in the room

Yesterday evening was one of a kind.
After some bus adventures in rain and darkness we headed out on the ferry to the islands outside Göteborg. We finally got to the atelier/gallery where this evening's party was going to take place. A fire basket welcomed us, and already in the garden I knew here is a place for diverse creativity.
  
The sweet couple Lena and Mats, artist and musician, invited friends for a christmas singing evening. Gunnar Eriksson is among their friends for years and years, so they asked him to bring along some of his singers and musicians who could guide through an improvised free happening of old songs, new experiences. It was not a christmas concert as we know it since before.
Anders Jormin on double base was there too, what pure joy to hear him improvise and add his musical colors to all the voices. He's professeur in jazz in both in Göteborg University and Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Outstanding musician touring the world.
I was asked to come with and I felt I could not miss out this new approach to making christmas music. High expectations but it turned out even more fun and unpredictable.

This was an evening when we sang for eachother and with eachother, weaving music, having no sheets of music, just singing from the heart. Gunnar inventing new patterns in music instantly, and involving every guest in the room.

Nice food and wine, many a good story and laughter. Storytelling at it's sweet form developed among local jazz musicians, and Gunnar's many anecdotes from his travelling.

After midnight my friend Gabriella and me danced lindy hop to live music. I had brought my dance shoes, you never know when the opportunity comes.

This evening I went to the yearly christmas concert my daughters school's music classes give. I totally give in to all the beautiful voices, young voices, their tenderness that grown up choirs might lack, the choice of some of the finest traditional christmas songs. This starts to be a very important tradition to go to their christmas concert in Johannebergs church.

Living room song circle with Lei-La

One of the finest things I know is to have a choir.
People who come for the reason to sing together,
for each other,
for one self.
And tonight it was back to the way how it all started,
living room song circle.

Many years ago I had a kind of open house on certain Saturdays, in my own home, when anyone could come and join and sing. It was a bit underground informal, some people knew me from earlier workshops and word spread from mouth to ear.

For now my apartment is a bit too small for hosting the whole choir Lei-La. We are so lucky we've been invited to sing in the house where Tommy and Kerstin lives, a house on the hill near the forest.

Since we don't do much eating when we have the regular choir rehearsals we had an agreement to do this even more tonight. A wonderful potluck party, in the way only choirs can create.

eating more,
singing more.

Kören Lei-La öppen repetition

Kom och sjung med oss när mörkret faller på!

Tisdag 26 november är det öppen repetition med kören Lei-La i Folkets Hus i Hammarkullen kl 19. Alla som vill komma och uppleva hur vi jobbar med sången och folkmusiken är varmt välkomna. Det blir delvis att lyssna på kören och delvis att själv sjunga med.

* I Lei-La använder vi inga noter utan allt lärs in genom att lyssna och härma.
* Körledare är Eva Rune, folksångerska med internationellt arbetsfält och mottagare av Angereds kulturpris 2010.
* Sångerna är folkmusik av olika slag, ibland svängigt och ibland lyssnande stilla vackert.
* Både kvinnor och män sjunger i kören och det krävs inga inträdesprov för att få börja.
* Röstuppvärmning varje gång mellan kl 19.00 - 19.20, för hela kroppens och röstens välbefinnande.
* Terminsavgift 1000 kr för 12 tillfällen. Reducerat pris för studenter, ungdomar, arbetssökande, 500 kr.

Vi håller denna öppna repetition för att välkomna nya medlemmar med start efter nyår, kanske några som är lokalt bosatta? Det vore väldigt roligt att träffa fler från Hammarkullen men det är givetvis inget krav var man bor. Det enda som behövs är lust att sjunga och viljan att under 2 x 45 minuterspass experimentera med sång, klang, rytmer, röstens alla utrycksmedel, medhörning med varandra, memorera texter osv.

Jag inspireras av folkmusik från olika delar av världen, hur människor samlas i helt informella sammanhang för att bara sjunga för och med varandra. Living room song circle. Kören Lei-La ger inte så ofta konsert, men i fredags trallade vi till dans på Folkmusikkafeet Allégården för första gången och det gav mersmak.

Stjärnspel

Nu är det dags att ta fram pärmen med alla julsångerna igen. Jag blir glad!
Dessutom blir det tillfälle att i år få göra julspel med barnen i Hjällbo. Så inför detta och annat ska jag välja bland alla mina favoriter i julsång-pärmen. Jag försöker också lägga till någon sång som är ny för mig själv varje år. Därför har jag nu börjat sjunga "Hören I herdar i skogar och ängar", som finns på Sågskäras jul-cd Apelgrå. En ny favorit helt klart, en sång med fokus på herdarna. Och jag är just färdig med ett trestämmigt arrangemang som min kör kan få prova.

Stjärnspel är ett äldre namn för julspel. Ett namn som klingar som vintergatan, snöklädda skogar, ljus i mörkret.

Min kör Lei-La ska sjunga julsånger bara för oss själva i år. Vi får se om det till ett annat år blir läge att bjuda på någon form av Stjärnspels-konsert.

Dynamic work, love my work

Last week was a over dose of administrative work, wich is normal from time to time. Reports, applications, making half year book-work of economy, buying a printer, restoring my broken Sibelius-program.

For the broken Sibelius-program (writing music scores on the computer) successful restoring I owe my thanks to computer wizard Pär Johansson! Feels great to have Sibelius again! I made all music notations for my book Bröllopssånger och Kärleksvisor in Sibelius, and soon after giving away all my material for the making of the book, this Sibelius-program broke down completely. Exhausted program maybe?

So this week starts totally different. To balance up I've made yoga, been singing, prepared for my lovely choir Lei-La tonight. I go out in the sun light and sing for myself, the birds, insects, plants and trees around me.

Yesterday I spend the afternoon walking 3 hours in the forest, in sunshine on magic path systems leading up to a small remote lake. Two women and three dogs having the most lovely time in the fresh air. And this is for free! It's there for us to enjoy.

Today started just great as well. In the morning I had a good time making music with Sara, preparing some ideas of music for Myst.
I also got a phone call wich was very inspiring, on the subject "The mysteries of human voice".

Kören Lei-La på nya äventyr!

Nu äntligen har jag höstens alla datum på plats, och det är med största glädje jag hälsar välkomna till en ny termin med kören Lei-La! Vi har ny lokal och den är jättefin!

Är du intresserad att komma med? Det går bra att testa ett par gånger innan man bestämmer sig.

Klockslag: 19-20.45 med en kvarts paus.
Plats: Hammarkullen Folkets Hus. Hammarsalen en trappa upp.

Medtag: vattenflaska och frukt/egen smörgås.

Terminsavgift: 1000 kr inkl moms på faktura.
Ungdomspris 200 kr på faktura.
Arbetssökande: 500 kr på faktura.

Sånger och idé:
Blandad kör, både tjejer och killar, inga inträdesprov. Vi jobbar utan noter, kör på gehör. Det mesta av repertoaren baseras på folkliga sånger. Det kan bli nya influenser från olika håll, mycket utifrån mina olika resor och möten. Vi kommer att sjunga enstämmigt, tvåstämmigt, flerstämmigt, svängigt, roligt, frirytmiskt, experimentiellt. Jag vill gärna dela med mig av några av Gunnar Erikssons tekniker för kör på gehör.

Varje körövning startar med en skön röstuppvärmning. Hela hösten gör vi ett och samma uppvärmningsprogram för att fördjupa oss i vår egen rösthälsa och röst-botten. Känna välbefinnande med vår egen röst, förankrad i kroppen. Samma uppvärmningsprogram hela hösten gör att vi kommer till stadiet då man bara känner och gör, utan att behöva tänka så mycket med huvudet.
Den röst-yogakurs jag nyss gått har gett mig inspiration och jag kommer att ta några väl valda övningar från denna kurs och förmedla vidare till er. Det är kunskap som bygger på sådant jag haft med mig länge så det känns helt ok att införliva detta, trots att jag inte är expert på just röst-yoga.


Ny termin, ny lokal och flera nya medlemmar. Det här ska verkligen bli roligt!

Three concerts in three very different venues.
First concert was a big hall, Altes Elwerk in Greifswald. Chamber music feeling, a wonderful audience giving us the most heartful response.
Second concert in an out door venue on the country side, Venne Früling Folk Festival. Beautiful small, families, young people, rain and sunshine in mix, and a super nice sound. Thank you sound engineer, and thank you lovely audience!
Third concert in a club in Berlin. In the nice area of Prentzlauerberg, full of small and hidden pearls of culture everywhere. Great night out in Berlin. Met lovely people in both audience and the local arrangers, promoters of vocal music and excellent artists, Mattias and Tania.

Svenska Kammarkören singing "Stjärnan" by Susanne Rosenberg

What a joy, very special for me to sit and listen to this beautiful concert Sunday 16th of Dec in Christinae church in Göteborg.

Svenska Kammarkören (Swedish Chamber Choir) conducted by Simon Phipps.

A program of christmas songs and as a very special event they performed for the very first time a piece written by Susanne Rosenberg, "Stjärnan" (The star). Susanne is my former teacher from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. I appreciated her piece very much, it was performed with elegance by the choir. It's based on various folk traditions like the old "star-songs" that I have written about in my blogg recently + religious hymns sung in the villages in the old days. Susannes mastery of this art is famous not only in Sweden but abroad. Susanne has a unique knowledge how to create multi-part singing out of the techniques provided in folk music.

Among my top favourites in their concert was Praetorius Det är en ros utsprungen in a beautiful arrangement by J. Sandström.
I favour Susanne's piece because I'm so deeply attached to her music and my long history hearing her artistery in music. Plus I love to hear when choirs perform newly written music in addition to the classical pieces.
I also enjoyed very much hearing Ding dong merrily the sky. Just because Simon Phipps has his background in english choir tradition and he really made something light and extra out of this wellknown song.

Svenska kammarkören is one of the top choirs, and they are capable of diverse styles and complicated choir pieces. Hearing them do a piece by Susanne was really interesting. They bring out some deep qualities in her song Stjärnan. Because I'm familiar with folk music I also know what a singer can do if you are trained in the style. I can imagine that there are more to explore for Svenska Kammarkören, especially in the field of rythmical singing, the very small details in how to make the music bounce. What they did now was beautiful, I'm not talking about right or wrong, it's just that there are so many levels to explore.

Let's face it, we are in the time of holy madness of christmas concerts.....

Sing by ear, sing by heart and Teaching Tolerance

Goodmorning!

Today my choir Lei-La will meet and sing our last rehersal before Christmas. Time flies! We have now had our first 10 rehersals and it goes super fine! So far we haven't picked up one piece of paper of music notes, we sing by ear and by heart.

Lei-La choir is open to anyone who wish to participate, women, men, teenagers. You may join us after Christmas or in August 2013. Just contact me on email.

"....to face and conquer our own prejudices, no matter what they are."

This is from an article I read this morning. Talking about how teachers can help the natural instinct young people have in compassion, willingness to make a change, tolerance and courage.

This teacher used to teach in a relatively poor area but change to another job where she tutored fairly rich children. In the beginning she faced her own prejudices that the rich children would be ignorant and selfish towards the rest of the society. She found out they really cared, and just had to broaden the horizon to understand more of the diversity. I especially like the way this teacher describes how she thought she was trained to look beyond clothes, skin colour and see the presonality instead. But she realized she's never fully trained in this ability, it's a constant journey to not judge and make labels of people.

Winter is here, and Pe Sla - We Did It!!!!!

Thank you everyone who came to the church in Svärdsjö for the evening concert Himmelen Inom (≈ Heaven within)by Anders Nyberg. We enjoyed very much to sing to you, to share the experience. On February 3 the same ensemble will perform again in Sundborn church. Welcome back then!

This music has followed me for many years, a great part of my life. It seems like it keeps on doing that.

After the concert I found out that the sacred land Pe Sla in Black Hills, US, has now been purchased by the Lakota Sioux Nation, who has since the beginning of time concidered it as the birth place of their nation. It's been a great journey of hope, strength and unity to raise the amount of money that was asked for. A totally awesome process where many people around the whole world joined in to protect this piece of land to stand for the future, the children, for prayers, for peace. (It was of course stolen land back in the 18-hundreds during the gold rush.)

My November thoughts

It's been more than a month since the song book was released, and Irmelin has recorded songs for our new album. It's been phonecalls, emails, new applications, rehersals. I've almost forgot how it is to have free time. So I experience the classical signs of post production stress. I'm finding mysef in a time of emptiness. Too much happened in very short time. My life journey has taken me to some unknown roads. Some days it's a bit hard to navigate forward but it seems like this is what it is to be a person 2012 on earth, I see lot of this around me too.

In the middle of this emptiness I know something new is going to happen. A change of view. An adaption. I already see some of the patters of the old are fading away and leaving me with a new sense of light. Can it be that I became looked in my own old thoughts and ambitions?

Oh, this evening was a pearl, to sing with the children and go in there with the full aim of having a good time together. It's all about sing together and enjoy it. No need to prove anything. No need to worry. It's actually a great gift to see the faces of the children and see their families gathering. Beautiful it is. Simple as that, in a smaller church on the outskirts of Göteborg, on a November dark evening.

I just want to express that in the middle of my tiredness I feel a great thankfulness too. On the bus travelling home from this event I found a poem that spoke to me:

 Tomorrow is choir day! I realize I'm looking forward with a brand new kind of feeling. Just the joy of having a choir where I can work in a way that I wish I was a member/singer in the choir myself. Today I have been preparing for tomorrows rehersal. Written some new arrangements, there will be some new things never heard before.

Blue Moon Friday

Blue Moon, that's when there's a full moon for the second time in a month. Like today! The last day of beautiful August.

So, it's been a full week! So much achieved, and yet sometimes I think time fly really fast and what did I do?
This Tuesday I started a choir! So great to see all the people that signed up and came. Great to get going! It started really well, so good singers! I'm fortunate with this. Also fortunate with the nice location, at the gardens of Lärjeån.
And today I had a wonderful rehersal. Creating music together with Ahmad Al Khatib, oud, and Martin Holmlund, upright bass. Imagine how happy I am to sing with theese guys!



This week has been full of environmental activism as well. Here in Sweden it's a huge protest againt the destruction of real old pine forest wich are the home for many endangered spieces of wild life. A private owned company want to dig a big whole in this area. Digging for lime stone. Activists are hiding in the forest, some climb up in the trees. And in the US I follow the Lakota Sioux Nation who wants to buy back the sacred land of Pe' Sla. Buy back! It's stolen land from them anyway.

As a teenager I read the book Black Elk Speaks. I took big interest in that book. Lot's of the history written about there is taken place at Black Hills. Pe' Sla is a sacred site in the Black Hills.

The more I read this interesting articles, I get amazed and proud to hear all the voices of people who stand up for the earth and our future generations. Go go go!

Sjung med mig i min nya kör

Till hösten har jag en stor nyhet på gång, en alldeles nystartad kör. Du är varmt välkommen, och du får gärna ta med dig kompisar som är intresserad av att sjunga folkmusik i kör, eller kanske du känner någon som skulle vara intresserad?

Klockslag: 19-20.45 med en kvarts paus.

Det är nästan en månads uppehåll i mitten och det beror på turné och skivinspelning.

Sånger och idé:
Blandad kör, både tjejer och killar. Vi jobbar utan noter, kör på gehör. Det mesta av repertoaren baseras på folkliga sånger. När vi hunnit bli lite varma i kläderna kan vi se om vi vill utvidga repertoaren med musik av andra rötter än folkmusik. Det kan bli nya influenser från olika håll, mycket utifrån mina olika resor och möten. Vi kommer att sjunga enstämmigt, tvåstämmigt, flerstämmigt, svängigt, roligt. Kanske plockar vi upp några av Gunnar Erikssons tekniker för kör på gehör. Det är en tanke jag har att börja med musik ur nya boken Bröllopssånger och kärleksvisor.


Vi har redan blivit tillfrågade att göra en vårkonsert på Lärjeåns Trädgårdar. Det är roligt och ett utmärkt mål att jobba mot.
