On the last day of our conference we did reflections and circle talking about how to proceed. How can we build stronger circles and voice the tacit knowledge we share? Very empowering! Wordsmith and painting artist Malin Sverige showed us beautiful paintings she created in our conference, her reflection. When her pictures was displayed the whole room started to sing in a collective improvisation.

I wonder how this could be possible in any other conference?

The past weekend I spend time in Stockholm with an amazing gathering of the tribe of folk singers. I'm been awestruck by the power and creativity, filled with new inspiration.

Reunion of friends I've known since many years. Friends from my time as student at KMH (Royal College of Music) Friends from the first ever, the glorious, the turning point: Ethno -90.

We had to use english as the official language since we speake so many languages in this group and not all of us share the same language root. Finnish, Latvian, Estonian and Scandinavian languages.

I have to say that listening to the songs I couldn't follow the lyrics was maybe the most memorable for me in the concerts. Music has the power to take a grip even if there's no common language. Music is the common language and it speaks clearly about what it is to be a human.

We are in Vaasa right now together with hundreds and hundreds of other singers. It's the Vaasa choir Festival. Super nicely organized by the festival crew, many thanks, kiitos kiitos! Your dedication for the vocal music is so uplifting and empowering. Lovely to walk in the center of town and hear choir music in every corner.

Yesterday evening we made a concert at Ritz, a theater-like hall, it's a cinema with totally beautiful original atmospher. Interiors from the time it was built. A special thank you to all who came to listen with so big ears and big hearts. Kiitos to all of you. We allways love to share the stories from the sea, from the travellers, of love, of death, of joy again after the sorrow.

It's always a great pleasure to sing in a hall like this, with good light and sound and a setting that enhance focus and energy for the details in our voices and music.

I wonder if they sometimes dance lindy hop, balboa or boogie woogie here? This is just outside the big cinema hall.

We had a lovely dinner at il Banco, a house built on 1860 for a bank in those days. Today a culinary rich place to go, my dinner was ecellent.

Today we perform again at Ritz and this time it's a shared concert with the choir Philomela. I'm very much looking forward to sing there. We had super nice sound!

Gone wild. A night of the folly

Rain and more rain. A very warm night for the season.
But no rain will stop the star from going from house to house and knock the door. Stomping the grounds of Hönö Island. May we come in and sing the star-song?

Money was collected for charity. This year for the Swedish Sea Rescue Society and the Cancer Research Foundation.

One of my fellow carachters, "the star", told me she will keep on doing this as long as she can. -"Because when you go out in the night in masquerade and disguised, it's a feeling we are the only ones that exist in the whole world."

We formed four bands of the Star. 7-8 people in each band. Seems to be a word-of-mouth organized thing, who is coming and joining. Each band walk in different neighbourhoods on the island.

At midnight we gathered after performing in 20-25 houses/band and shared a hot meal. Home made Jansons has never tasted better! Also sharing some really funny stories of the nights experiences.

After we took our masks & costumes off and washed away the thick layers of make up, I couldn't recognize the people I've spend the whole afternoon + night with. When I saw the boots I could tell who it was.

Now it's the day after. I'm writing and thinking back on a fantastic night out on the wild island. Happily I will go out tonight again but now it's the folly of the dance floor.

This evening I went to the yearly christmas concert my daughters school's music classes give. I totally give in to all the beautiful voices, young voices, their tenderness that grown up choirs might lack, the choice of some of the finest traditional christmas songs. This starts to be a very important tradition to go to their christmas concert in Johannebergs church.

Nu äntligen har jag höstens alla datum på plats, och det är med största glädje jag hälsar välkomna till en ny termin med kören Lei-La! Vi har ny lokal och den är jättefin!

Är du intresserad att komma med? Det går bra att testa ett par gånger innan man bestämmer sig.

Sånger och idé:
Blandad kör, både tjejer och killar, inga inträdesprov. Vi jobbar utan noter, kör på gehör. Det mesta av repertoaren baseras på folkliga sånger. Det kan bli nya influenser från olika håll, mycket utifrån mina olika resor och möten. Vi kommer att sjunga enstämmigt, tvåstämmigt, flerstämmigt, svängigt, roligt, frirytmiskt, experimentiellt. Jag vill gärna dela med mig av några av Gunnar Erikssons tekniker för kör på gehör.

Varje körövning startar med en skön röstuppvärmning. Hela hösten gör vi ett och samma uppvärmningsprogram för att fördjupa oss i vår egen rösthälsa och röst-botten. Känna välbefinnande med vår egen röst, förankrad i kroppen. Samma uppvärmningsprogram hela hösten gör att vi kommer till stadiet då man bara känner och gör, utan att behöva tänka så mycket med huvudet.
Den röst-yogakurs jag nyss gått har gett mig inspiration och jag kommer att ta några väl valda övningar från denna kurs och förmedla vidare till er. Det är kunskap som bygger på sådant jag haft med mig länge så det känns helt ok att införliva detta, trots att jag inte är expert på just röst-yoga.


Ny termin, ny lokal och flera nya medlemmar. Det här ska verkligen bli roligt!

Songs on Twelves Night

Twelves Night has been connected with many songs. Songs and a theatrical play with a cast mixed of religious and pagan caracters. Songs are very often about the star of Betlehem and the three wise men. How the star guided them to Betlehem where they worshipped the child, plus some other connected stories. Sometimes it's about how the parents take the child and flee to Egypt, to escape King Herode and his soldiers.

Like in oral tradition kept by youth it was different from village to village exactly how the melody was sung and what verses, and what caracters took part in the play. King Herode and the child murders was sometimes part of the repertoire. Probably because of the un-nameable horrors in the story. What was deeply distrurbing and scary was then, like now, the part that draw a lot of attention. It might even function as a way of handling the dark side of the human nature, to get in contact with what is not acceptable. A story to be told so everybody learns and understands the absolute tabo of killing. To deal with things within the frame of a theatrical play is today known as a therapeutical way of understanding life of human beings. Even if it was not outspoken at that time, it was surely understood subconsiously.

What I like a lot is all the songs about the star. I've always thought about it as a way of holding up the light. Singing the light in a dark time. Living in the northern part of the world you can imagine how day light fades away between 3 and 4 in the afternoon in early January. This applies to Göteborg. It's even earlier if you live more far north in Sweden.

Carry the light. That's exactely what this tradition was about, put a candle in a home made star on a stick and carry it around.

In Grycksbo in Dalarna it's a little bit different, instead of star-bearers, kings and soldiers, it's a group of Tomtar, plural for Santa, who form a parade and give gifts of sweets to the children. It started off to raise money for people in need during the second world war if I remember right.

And finally, a favourite among beautiful folk songs around christmas. This one is like a short poem more than a story leading from A to B. Someone prays to be given the light on our road of life.

Får i kål. Everyone can take a small step for the climate

I'll get back to music soon, there's so much good music I've heard lately!

But here's something that interests and concerns me much too.

With the climate change in mind we can all contribute with trying to buy food that is seasonal and not requiring too much transportation and energy for growing.
Here's a favourite dish, "Får i kål" = Sheep in cabbage. In Norway it's a national dish, many farms there have to be sheep-farms due to the landscape. Very steep hillsides is the place where the sheep spend their summers.

1 kg lambs meat, cut in cubes. I used the front part of the lamb.
1 small white cabbage
6 big carrots (my addition to the original recipie)
butter for frying
a little bit of wheet flour
salt
allspice (kryddpeppar)

Cut big pieces of white cabbage and start and end with white cabbage in the pot. In between you can mix all the other ingredients, sprinkle a little bit wheet flour and salt between layers. Add some allspice, I used them whole, not grinded.

First layer cabbage is fried in butter.

Next layers are just put on top and then it will be cooked together, not fried. So it's very easy to make this.

The cabbage contains lot of water and the main idea is to let this dish boil almost without added water. Some recipies suggest to add a little water, I didn't this time. It's the water in the vegetables that creates the nice sauce.

Boil it on low temperature for long time. 2 to 3 hours.

While it's boiling you can take a little time to join the rise for a climate change. I strongly believe we have to both change our own life style + organize together and put pressure politically. Here's a network with many good suggestions what you can do. Föräldravrålet

I promised to show pics from baking bread, christmas style. Elisabet, I curious to see the original, will you show me one day? I'm happy if I can spread some smile with showing theese two, a bit peculiar looking ones.
Long time ago there was a tradition in my family to bake a bread called julkuse (= yule horse) for christmas. This is my first try out of what I heard it looked like. I don't have the recipie and I love to make up my own recipies with ingredients I like. This time I had walnut, raisins and apricots, dough based on with dinkel + wheet flour.

Myths and songs on Boxing Day

Early in the morning of Boxing Day was a very special occasion in the old days. The traditions has roots dating back before christianity came to Sweden. It was a day when the horses were supposed to be taken to a special well of fertility, a Stephens well. Drinking the water there on this particular day the horses would be strong and healthy the coming year.

This was also a day when the young people in the village set out on begging processions, singing Stephens songs. Food was gathered for the christmas parties that followed the next days. A way of getting together during the darkest time of the year, dance and play games. It was really popular! Otherwise around the year it was so much work to do on the farms and not really time and space for making parties.

Två nya recensioner om boken:

Spelmannen 4-2012
Eva Rune är en mångsidig och skicklig sångerska som i år haft glädjen att ro ett riktigt önskeprojekt i hamn. Bröllopssånger och kärleksvisor ur nordisk folktradition (Bo Ejeby Förlag) är namnet på en sångbok där hon samlar ett antal av sina favoriter bland alla de visor som passerat förbi under hennes resor och åtaganden i de nordiska länderna. Idén till boken kom när Eva fått fler och fler uppdrag att sjunga på bröllop, ett sammanhang där folkliga kärlekssånger passar särdeles väl.

Här finns alltså Evas personliga favoriter av nordiska sånger, koraler, bordsvisor och visor till dans. Fina bilder och personliga kommentarer gör detta till en vacker bok man gärna bläddrar i.

Och så finns det alltså mer än hundra vackra sånger att dela på.

Kuriren 12 december 2012:
Kärleken är störst av dem alla och bröllopet har genom tiderna setts som livets höjdpunkt. Detta gäller på det personliga likaväl som på ett allmännare, samhälleligt plan. Det är alltså inget obetydligt ämne vissångerskan Eva Rune har tagit sig an som redaktör för boken Bröllopssånger och kärleksvisor.

Detta är mera en samling än en bok. Materialet är visor från Norden och det "bokliga" inskränker sig till introduktioner och små anteckningar. Detta är inte nödvändigtvis ett minus. Vi talar här om traditionsmusik och det betyder ju att var och en lär sig visan, gör den till sin egen - och för denna nya visa vidare till följande lyssnare.

Det här materialet är mångsidigt. Så är ju också kärleken - och minsann alla krokar och ritualer kring bröllopet! Bokens layout och tryck är framförallt klart och lättläst. Vid sidan av detta ger anteckningarna, källförteckningen och diskografin god hjälp för den som vill söka sig vidare. En högst behändig samling som än en gång bekräftar hur mycket vi har gemensamt på det här området.

Min bok har hög koncentration på Dalarna för att vara en nordisk sångbok. Så jag bläddrade igenom och kollade hur många visor som egentligen har traditionsbärare med Dalarna som ursprung. 33 av bokens 125 sånger kommer från Dalarna! Och boken innehåller visor från Sverige, Norge, Finland, Danmark, Färöarna, Estland och en från Ukraina. Så det är nog ganska tydligt var jag har min musikaliska hemvist :-)

December memories from Lindsberg, now and then

This morning we had -19° C. Stars and moon in the sky and a beautiful sun rise.

Tonight I'm going to sing in town, in a small book store. Welcome to Lohrs at Kapellplatsen at 18.30. I'm singing and telling stories from the new songbook (containing wedding songs from Nordic countries), "Bröllopssånger och kärleksvisor". In theese days it's rare to find old style small book stores with lots of personality. So please be welcome and enjoy a special evening at Lohrs.

Yesterday I found out about Rebecka Carlsson who writes about her experiences in Egypt at Tahir Square during the revolution. She share visions about true collaborations where people interact out of pure love and not for gaining personal win. Please visit her blog here, written in swedish, I am really inspired by her thoughts. In her blog she writes that Lindsberg, a big house in Dalarna will be the place to continue develop long lasting, earth friendly, people friendly collaboration with a new way of looking at economy. So the tradition keeps on, this house has for a long time been part of the alternative movement!



In my young days my family and I used to visit a small scale Spelmansstämma in December in this house Lindsberg. This was the first Spelmansstämma I visited. I clearly remember the people, the music, the home made food with the typical spices of christmas bread and cookies. And a totally awesome atmosphere. I don't know if I had ever before seen grown ups being so captured by music and dance.

Today I got a short message from someone who bought my book Bröllopssånger och kärleksvisor. She says the book brought her happiness in her time of illness.

Pia-påse vill jag önska mig

I år ska jag önska mig en Pia-påse i julklapp. Det är en kasse med hushållsvaror inhandlade hos Handlarn i Övertänger, Pias affär. I påsen kan det till exempel finnas mandel, kryddor, diskborste, tvättmedel, nån god ost från charken, choklad, nötter, olivolja, kaffe. Grejen är att jag högst av allt önskar mig en blomstrande verksamhet för byns hjärta. Utan butiken i Övertänger skulle mycket stanna av och definitivt bli mer komplicerat för mig som inte har bil att åka hit och dit och handla.

Meningen med denna bok är att den ska lysa upp, värma hjärtan, bjuda på musik och poesi som generationer av människor fört vidare i visor. Därför blev jag så fantastisk glad att läsa bokens recension i Falukuriren förra veckan där Ragna Fahlander skrev "Oj, en hel bok med sånger om lycklig kärlek! Må-bra-potentialen är enorm, och visst blir jag på gott humör när jag bläddrar och nynnar." Då känns det som att formgivaren Gabriella Persson och jag har lyckats med vårt uppsåt. Efter åren med gruvarbetarsångernas allvar, patos, delvis elände, men också massor av kraft, så ville jag göra något om glädje, kärlek, passion och omsorg.

Jag köper julklappar året om. När jag råkar finna något som passar till en person, lika bra att inhandla och lägga i presentskåpet. För det är mindre roligt att stressa fram idéer när tiden börjar bli knapp före jul. Och för den delen, det vore roligt att ge bort några Pia-påsar till släkt och vänner också.

Efter ett insamlingsarbete på 17 år är boken färdig! Den innehåller 125 sånger ur folklig tradition och är utgiven på Bo Ejeby Förlag. Det är passionerade sånger där den goda kärleken tolkas på många olika sätt. Det finns kärleksvisor, friarvisor, bordsvisor och visor till dans. Nordic Wedding Music har valt att tolka dessa med en stor portion improvisation, i gränslandet mellan folkmusik och jazz. Kärlekssångerna kommer från hela Norden och passar lika bra att sjunga på fest som i vardag. Humor blandas med klokheter i denna skatt som generationer av människor fört vidare i muntligt arv.

Today it's concert-time!

Warmest welcome to listen in to some of the most passionate love-songs found in nordic traditions. The songs are from the Faroe islands, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Time to add Denmark isn't it? That will come sooner or later, I've just found some pearls of songs from Denmark too....

Dreams of Faroe Islands

Do you also return to places time after time in your dreams? This night I was in the green atlantic islands of my dreams again. I often come back to the Faroe Islands. In the dream I was travelling on a boat going between the many islands, and I saw huge whales just under the surface. There was a mother whale and her baby, they where light grey in their skin. Some of my friends where on the boat as well. I woke up with a feeling of happiness and peace.

All my life I've been interested to go to places where I have a view. Like mountains, the northern mountains of Sweden, wich in some ways are a little bit similar to the Faroe Islands.

I love to see the sky from horizon to horizon.

And the sea.

I can study the colours of the sea and the sky, colours that hardly can be captured in a photo. Fog and haze and light create the miracles of beauty in theese places.

Somehow I have prefered to walk there, while my sister is a true sailing woman, adventurous on the sea.

I'm more a mountain soul.

When I climb up I get so excited to see what's behind the top of the mountain, what's the view on the other side?

We have become perennials at the charming restaurant Allotria in Helsinki. We discovered this pearl on Wednesday when we performed there at Perinnearkku folk music club. After that we just kept coming back, for the most delicious food in creative combinations of tastes. Eva and Maria has tried several of the dishes in the menue, Karin stayed with her delicious salad, wich really means highest score for a salad!


With the flowers we got at todays concert, we are happy and starving after really good performance!



Mr Billy Kelly, who served us food and always being so nice to us. The staff working there has treated us in the most friendly and generous way. We've talked about Finland, Ireland, Faroe Islands, music, culture, food and all things that makes life nice. And today we had the chance to meet the chef shortly and thank him directly for the lovely food. I hope he will put his recipies in a cook book one day, hope it's written in english! The chef is from Boston, US, so that's not too far away guess.
