(Aug. 23) -- Today's good news from the saga of the trapped Chilean miners -- all 33 are alive in a shelter in one of the shafts of the San Jose mine -- was punctuated by visceral video footage of one of the trapped men.

The miners have so far survived 17 days trapped deep underground, and though rescue is still months away, mine expert Davitt McAteer tells USA Today that since the miners have already survived for this long, there should be little cause for concern for their physical health. He also relayed guarded optimism about their mental condition. McAteer's concerns about the psychological traumas that often befall miners in such isolated situations may be mitigated by what the video demonstrates: "They've established communication with the guys; there are people who can talk them through that."

The video comes from CNN Chile and shows the grainy footage of the face of trapped miner Jimmy Sanchez from a video camera being fed down the mine shaft.
