Between singing and spoken word

Our days of work is just over.
Susanne, Maria, Ulrika and me singing all day long. Preparing for next step of contemporary composing within the folk music context.

Increadible how the paradox of time is confusing my mind. Time went so quickly. At the same time it feels like I've been there in the sweet little village of Noraström for a long time. We manage to do so much together with the music.

Ideas we brought into our project has now been tried out in reality. Many improvisation structures has been very fruitful. We go back home now to compleete the music for the larger ensemble. We'll be 8 folk singer performing this!

Below Susanne and Ulrika are singing  instantly from a book of hilarious written text, deep and poetic. It requires long experience to do it in two part singing. We all took turns doing improvisations, and sometimes all four at the same time.

Retreat for music writing

Time to open the door to the musical treasures.

For three days I will be away in the far north of Sweden, outside Sundsvall in a small village. Together with the amazing singstresses, Susanne Rosenberg, Maria Misgeld and Ulrika Bodén I will dig deep and weave a totally new creation of vocal music. Contemporary folk songs.
Putting pieces together, contributing each one of us, circling the ideas around and try it out live.
This is the first meeting. So far we have been preparing one by one at home, just mailing ideas to eachother.

So I'll put my boots on the ground and go to the living room song circle.

We'll stay at a small countryside inn, a house build 1810 for the priest and his family in those days. I imagine the walls are full of forgotten songs.

Gone wild. A night of the folly

Rain and more rain. A very warm night for the season.
But no rain will stop the star from going from house to house and knock the door. Stomping the grounds of Hönö Island. May we come in and sing the star-song?

Money was collected for charity. This year for the Swedish Sea Rescue Society and the Cancer Research Foundation.

One of my fellow carachters, "the star", told me she will keep on doing this as long as she can. -"Because when you go out in the night in masquerade and disguised, it's a feeling we are the only ones that exist in the whole world."

We formed four bands of the Star. 7-8 people in each band. Seems to be a word-of-mouth organized thing, who is coming and joining. Each band walk in different neighbourhoods on the island.

Being someone else for a nigth. Taking on a compleete other personality. My role was to be a wise man of the East.

At midnight we gathered after performing in 20-25 houses/band and shared a hot meal. Home made Jansons has never tasted better! Also sharing some really funny stories of the nights experiences.

After we took our masks & costumes off and washed away the thick layers of make up, I couldn't recognize the people I've spend the whole afternoon + night with. When I saw the boots I could tell who it was.

Now it's the day after. I'm writing and thinking back on a fantastic night out on the wild island. Happily I will go out tonight again but now it's the folly of the dance floor.

Yesterday evening was one of a kind.
After some bus adventures in rain and darkness we headed out on the ferry to the islands outside Göteborg. We finally got to the atelier/gallery where this evening's party was going to take place. A fire basket welcomed us, and already in the garden I knew here is a place for diverse creativity.
  
The sweet couple Lena and Mats, artist and musician, invited friends for a christmas singing evening. Gunnar Eriksson is among their friends for years and years, so they asked him to bring along some of his singers and musicians who could guide through an improvised free happening of old songs, new experiences. It was not a christmas concert as we know it since before.
Anders Jormin on double base was there too, what pure joy to hear him improvise and add his musical colors to all the voices. He's professeur in jazz in both in Göteborg University and Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Outstanding musician touring the world.
I was asked to come with and I felt I could not miss out this new approach to making christmas music. High expectations but it turned out even more fun and unpredictable.

This was an evening when we sang for eachother and with eachother, weaving music, having no sheets of music, just singing from the heart. Gunnar inventing new patterns in music instantly, and involving every guest in the room.

Nice food and wine, many a good story and laughter. Storytelling at it's sweet form developed among local jazz musicians, and Gunnar's many anecdotes from his travelling.

After midnight my friend Gabriella and me danced lindy hop to live music. I had brought my dance shoes, you never know when the opportunity comes.

Stjärnspel

Nu är det dags att ta fram pärmen med alla julsångerna igen. Jag blir glad!
Dessutom blir det tillfälle att i år få göra julspel med barnen i Hjällbo. Så inför detta och annat ska jag välja bland alla mina favoriter i julsång-pärmen. Jag försöker också lägga till någon sång som är ny för mig själv varje år. Därför har jag nu börjat sjunga "Hören I herdar i skogar och ängar", som finns på Sågskäras jul-cd Apelgrå. En ny favorit helt klart, en sång med fokus på herdarna. Och jag är just färdig med ett trestämmigt arrangemang som min kör kan få prova.

Stjärnspel är ett äldre namn för julspel. Ett namn som klingar som vintergatan, snöklädda skogar, ljus i mörkret.

Min kör Lei-La ska sjunga julsånger bara för oss själva i år. Vi får se om det till ett annat år blir läge att bjuda på någon form av Stjärnspels-konsert.

Kören Lei-La på nya äventyr!

Nu äntligen har jag höstens alla datum på plats, och det är med största glädje jag hälsar välkomna till en ny termin med kören Lei-La! Vi har ny lokal och den är jättefin!

Är du intresserad att komma med? Det går bra att testa ett par gånger innan man bestämmer sig.

Klockslag: 19-20.45 med en kvarts paus.
Plats: Hammarkullen Folkets Hus. Hammarsalen en trappa upp.

Medtag: vattenflaska och frukt/egen smörgås.

Terminsavgift: 1000 kr inkl moms på faktura.

Sånger och idé:
Blandad kör, både tjejer och killar, inga inträdesprov. Vi jobbar utan noter, kör på gehör. Det mesta av repertoaren baseras på folkliga sånger. Det kan bli nya influenser från olika håll, mycket utifrån mina olika resor och möten. Vi kommer att sjunga enstämmigt, tvåstämmigt, flerstämmigt, svängigt, roligt, frirytmiskt, experimentiellt. Jag vill gärna dela med mig av några av Gunnar Erikssons tekniker för kör på gehör.

Varje körövning startar med en skön röstuppvärmning. Hela hösten gör vi ett och samma uppvärmningsprogram för att fördjupa oss i vår egen rösthälsa och röst-botten. Känna välbefinnande med vår egen röst, förankrad i kroppen. Samma uppvärmningsprogram hela hösten gör att vi kommer till stadiet då man bara känner och gör, utan att behöva tänka så mycket med huvudet.
Den röst-yogakurs jag nyss gått har gett mig inspiration och jag kommer att ta några väl valda övningar från denna kurs och förmedla vidare till er. Det är kunskap som bygger på sådant jag haft med mig länge så det känns helt ok att införliva detta, trots att jag inte är expert på just röst-yoga.


Ny termin, ny lokal och flera nya medlemmar. Det här ska verkligen bli roligt!

Sailing out this year: part 1

Seems like this year of 2011 turn to be a year with a boat theme. I try to summon up all inspiration for tomorrows concert at Galtabäck boat museum, and it's huge this time. I've recieved so much connected to boat trips I can fill endless of concerts with the music I feel inside. Irmelin started in January this year to sing sea shanties, preparing for both live concerts and recordings. North Sea Stories. Keep watch for that!

And tomorrow it's time to do a completely new concerts with Pers Nils Johansson with sea shanties, and it's not the same repertoire as Irmelin do. There are incredibly many beautiful songs from the sea. Some songs tell about heroic seamen who has to endure storms and thunder, even die for the sake. Some are about love, and longing for your sweetheart who is far away.

Now this summer, it's boats wherever I go. Here's where it all begun, in June.

Fasten seatbelts, last day of Windjammers Ball

Good morning to the new bright day, amazing I woke up before the alarmclock...it happens sometimes after a real late dance night.

Today there will be classes and after that the final Tea-dance. I hope I will still have strong legs, because yesterday everything speeded up, and most probably I'm not the only one with sore legs today. And now it's the last days and it's just to give it all, so fasten seatbelts!

Sofia and Daniel are the main organizers of the whole Windjammer event, and they are the most caring and passionate people, who has started the lindy hop on Åland only one year ago. Yesterday at the dance night there was a big Thank you and they were called up on stage. We were all very moved and they also, tears on cheeks, and the whole big dance crowd clapped hands like mad. Because Windjammers Ball is such an amazing event, so throughly worked in every piece. Perfectly done to be the first year up and running. Thank you Sofia and Daniel and all people who is/has been in the crew. Now, Sofia and Daniel lived in Göteborg up til recently, so we göteborgers are of course a bit extra proud.

SKJF, a very special weekend in Lausanne

It's truly amazing what energy 1100 children and young people can gather when they meet to sing together and for each other. Lausanne just did their big youth choir festival, SKJF (pronounced "skif") this weekend. I'm back home again, tired and happy and full of vibrant memories.
Gunnar Eriksson and I did 2 workshops on Friday with 500 children/young singers each time. Gunnar is introducing his work of choir ad lib.

That bar in Beaulieu with nice coffé became one of my favourite meeting spots. Also the spot for the one and only lindy hop session of the weekend. I never go anywhere without my dance shoes...and music from a cell phone can do when the need for dance is great. Coffé tastes the best when so much happiness is in the air.


The children have endless energy, constantly singing and playing on the free time, and it was not much free time of the day schedule. This game below starts with an acro/air step reminding me of lindy hop.


Friday night we were on three boats, all of us, children and staff and leaders of SKJF. What a success! For me it was a surprice that we all were invited to that boat trip on the lake. The kids really got into a spin, singing and doing "the wave".

On Saturday there was rehersals and another workshop with Gunnar and me for a group of Swizz choir leaders. On our small free time we walked the sunny streets of Lausanne, listening to the choirs performing in the squares and corners all over Lausanne center. See that girl playing with a ball on the street behind the choir?


Our big concert in the Cathedral, Saturday aftersoon. 1100 young people and children filling the space with their beautiful voices. It was amazing. I got tears in my eyes hearing them singing Magnificat as second piece. Gunnar lead the children in one of his carachteristic improvisations around some swiss and swedish folksongs and I joined in with my songs. What a special moment, I'm very thankful to be a part of this unique happening of sounds and songs under the cathedrals high and bright space. It's a sharing of voice and souls that rarely can be found. Just organizing a choir festival is a huge effort. Thank you everyone in the SKJF bringing us together!

Herräng lindy

Herräng dance camp 2010! Det är som att vara på en annan planet. Här är det dansen som allt kretsar kring, det gäller att äta och vila lagom utspritt över dygnet för att kunna maximera möjligheterna att dansa. Till slut blir det en karusell av skön drömlik tillvaro, intensivt men tillbakalutat, surrealistiskt, underbart, passion för dans. Kroppen ställer in sig på dans och efter ett par dagar kurs flyter det på riktigt bra.Några av världens bästa danslärare ger oss allt och lite till. Värmen är underbar, det blir mycket fokus på vattenflaskor, vätskeersättning och saltintag. Under de två tidigare tillfällen jag varit i Herräng har jag missat badet, playan. Men i förrgår gick vi dit och mina ögon öppnades för en annan sida av Herräng. Båtliv, familjer som badar. Det är tydligen inte bara hängivna dansare som är här.

Världsrekordförsök i lindy, 306 par dansade på fotbollsplan i Herräng. Mitt på dagen i sol och värme, tur att vi fick duscha i brandslang. Vattenparty!


Campingliv.
Den som är riktigt varm i solen kan öva lindy i en bassäng, skön svalka för fötterna. Eller bara sitta ner. För första gången i mitt liv tycker jag det är skönt att duscha kallt. Och här tar varmvattnet i duscharna slut ibland. Just i år duschar alla ca tre gånger o dagen, före och efter danspartyn, efter kurspassen. Tack Herrängs skola för att vi får slita på era duschar!

Grande finale

Idag i Haga, mötesplatsen vi utgått från innan varje arbetsdag med konserterna i Speldags, turné på äldreboenden och senior-träffar.
Så nu är det hela genomfört och vi har fått se och uppleva och möta många människor. 26 konserter gjorda på 12 arbetsdagar. Många fantastiska lyssnare som kanhända lyssnar på ett alldeles eget sätt. Ibland kan jag förlora mig i deras ögon där de sitter i sina rullstolar och inte säger något med munnen men säger allt med ögonen. De tar emot musiken på sitt eget sätt. Många har gett så mycket tacksamhet till oss, och några har ivrigt önskat sig dansbandslåtar eller Lasse Dahlqvist istället för våra skillingtryck och kärleksvisor ur folkmusikskatten. ja, det är bara att hänga med och möta dem som utrycker fritt ur hjärtat vad det tycker, positiv feed back såväl som negativ. Väldigt väldigt bra att möta publik som denna.

Varje konsert har vi spelat med fullt engagemang. även om det bara var en handfull lyssnare som var klara i huvudet.

Ikväll är det bara att pusta ut. Somrig luft och göken gal för jag vet inte vilken gång i ordningen nu. Koltrast på hustaken.

Hondan fick en puts med Autosol. Bort med rostprickar, på med kromglans.

Häromkvällen lekte dottern med två jämnåriga kompisar ute på gården. Det var en roll-lek om ett bageri med dramatiska vändningar och stränga chefer och sura kunder. men vad underbart det var att se dem leka i sandlådan och göra sandkakor! Tänk, det kanske inte är många såna tillfällen kvar innan de tycker det är för barnsligt. Jag var papparazzi i busken.
